What is our Net Zero Pathway
There will always be a reason to not do something - the list on the right are just some of the common objections used by companies to not do something about reaching Net Zero.
But the fact is that the UK Government has signed you, your business, indeed all of us, up to a 2050 Net Zero target. In June 2019, parliament passed legislation requiring the government to reduce the UK’s net emissions of greenhouse gases to Net Zero by 2050 based on 1990 levels. The odds are that carbon taxes will be used as a stick to make this happen. |
- 2050 is 30 years away so we don’t need to anything yet - Our key stakeholders haven’t mentioned Net Zero yet so why should we even look at it? - Why don’t we simply offset our emissions and declare carbon neutrality? - The business can’t afford to reach Net Zero |
Accepting the reality of the importance of reaching Net Zero, the next natural question is "how do we achieve it?" And this is where our Net Nero Pathway model comes in, with an example of a company’s Energy Transition state being:
“Over the last 5 years, our company has recorded a 74% reduction in the carbon footprint of the energy used throughout its supply chain, a 96% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, sourced 75% renewable electricity globally, and recorded a 92% reduction in waste to landfill across the global business. In short, the company is in the vanguard of corporate sustainability leadership in its sector.”

Scope 1 & 2 analysis:
✓ Document baseline (current) Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions ✓ Undertake a Site Energy Audit(s) including data analysis ✓ What EnMS/EMS systems are in place? ✓ What is the level and quality of metered energy data? ✓ What level and frequency of energy reporting is in place? ✓ Identify improvement opportunities / associated cost and GHG impacts |
Scope 3 analysis:
✓ SRD will establish framework for Scope 3 emissions quantification ✓ What are the key raw materials/ingredients? ✓ Does the current Procurement Policy consider Net Zero impacts? ✓ Does your process apply circular economy principles for zero waste? ✓ Who are your key suppliers and where are they located? ✓ What Net Zero strategies do your suppliers have in place? |
